Joy and Blessings for New Pope Leo XIV

A statement from Archbishop Paul D. Etienne

SEATTLE, May 8, 2025

We share the joy of people around the world as we welcome Pope Leo XIV as our new Holy Father. Let us pray the Lord fills him with the peace and consolation of the Holy Spirit in these first and early days of his pontificate. Since the Lord has chosen him as the Universal Shepherd of the whole People of God, may we now support him with our prayers and unity.

Pope Leo XIV is an amazing choice as the next successor of Peter. The name chosen tells us he will put the social teachings of the Church at the heart of this pontificate. I have found this man in my brief encounters to be humble, affable, confident and competent in carrying out his responsibilities. We have hopeful and bright days ahead!

We are also immensely grateful to the cardinals who so prayerfully entered the conclave process – a process that is both divine and human - to select the successor of St. Peter. By listening to the movement of the Holy Spirit and their own prayer and discernment, they elected Cardinal Robert Prevost and demonstrated for all of us how we are to live our baptismal calling, in the presence of God.

May is the Month of Mary

During May, the Church honors the Blessed Virgin Mary with special devotions such as May crownings, processions, and prayers. The rosary is especially encouraged this month, along with the Regina Coeli during the Easter season and Marian litanies like the Litany of Loreto, invoking her intercession under her many beautiful titles.

We have a pope! Robert Francis Prevost, Pope Leo XIV, was born in Chicago and holds dual citizenship with the USA and Peru. He sounds like a wonderful man who will champion all people, like Pope Francis. He holds a math degree from Villanueva and has been a missionary with the Augustinian Order in Peru for many years. He was appointed Cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023. His first address as pope was warm and inclusive. Praying he will be just as loved throughout the world as Pope Francis was.

We need parishioners to join our facility team.  Volunteering as part of the facility team is a beautiful way to serve God and your parish community. By helping care for the church, you contribute to maintaining a sacred space where we gather to worship, pray, and seek comfort. Your efforts, no matter how small, help create a welcoming and peaceful environment for others to encounter God. It's a humble and rewarding form of stewardship that allows you to give back to the church that nourishes your faith, while also strengthening bonds with fellow parishioners as you work together for a common purpose.

Last year, Pope St. John XXIII STEM Academy conducted an Enrollment Potential Study in collaboration with Meitler, a national Catholic school planning firm. This year, we are extending that work to create a strategic plan for Pope St. John XXIII STEM Academy for the next five years. As we did in the previous study, we know and understand the importance of hearing from families who currently have children enrolled at Pope St. John XXIII STEM Academy. We are asking you to complete an online survey in order to share your insights and opinions about Pope St. John XXIII STEM Academy. This survey is distinct from the survey many of you completed previously. Please complete the survey as soon as possible, but no later than May 14. It should take approximately 8-10 minutes to answer the survey questions. All responses are confidential and very important.
