Update on Status of Holy Rosary Church
Fr. Tuan, Fr. Hendry, and Pope Saint John XXIII Leadership met with Archbishop Etienne and some of his staff on August 14, 2024, to discuss next steps regarding Holy Rosary Church. The following are some highlights from that meeting.
- Holy Rosary church was closed for safety concerns in August 2019. Engineers did a complete assessment of the physical condition of the building, determining a minimum of $18 million would be required to fix the building, make seismic upgrades and tend to other maintenance issues. This amount did not include ongoing future maintenance.
- For nearly two years, Fr. Tuan, his staff, and parish leaders studied many possibilities for the future of Holy Rosary church. After reviewing the expenses and burden of staffing Holy Rosary as a site for ministry, the team concluded the best option was to request that the church be relegated to profane but not sordid use.
- Since then, the Archdiocese of Seattle launched Partners in the Gospel, which is meant to reorganize parishes for the purposes of reinvigorating the faith. One key question asked of our pastoral leaders and parishioners: What is the best use of our resources for accomplishing the mission of the Church?
- It is sad to see some of our current church buildings, like Holy Rosary, no longer in use, but we must face the hard realities of the present moment. Demographic shifts have altered the vibrancy of some of our parishes and we have fewer priests and trained lay ecclesial ministers to serve our people.
- Given that the Holy See upheld the recourse against the original decree due to an administrative error, we have the opportunity to revisit proposals for the future of Holy Rosary.

Cha Tuấn, Cha Hendry, và Ban Lãnh Đạo Giáo Xứ Thánh Giáo Hoàng Gioan XXIII đã có buổi làm việc với Đức Tổng Giám Mục Etienne và một số thành viên trong ban nhân sự của Giáo Phận vào ngày 14 tháng 8 năm 2024 để thảo luận về các bước tiếp theo liên quan đến Nhà Thờ Holy Rosary. Sau đây là một số điểm chính được rút ra từ cuộc họp:
- Tình trạng hiện tại của Nhà Thờ Holy Rosary: Nhà thờ đã bị đóng cửa vào tháng 8 năm 2019 vì lý do an toàn. Sau khi các kỹ sư thực hiện cuộc khảo sát chi tiết về tình trạng của tòa nhà, họ ước tính cần ít nhất 18 triệu đô la để sửa chữa, nâng cấp chống động đất và giải quyết các vấn đề bảo trì khác. - Chương trình Partners in the Gospel: Tổng Giáo Phận Seattle đã khởi xướng chương trình này nhằm tái tổ chức các giáo xứ để gia tăng sức sống cho đức tin. Một câu hỏi trọng tâm được đặt ra là: “Chúng ta cần sử dụng nguồn lực như thế nào để thực hiện sứ mệnh của Giáo Hội một cách tốt nhất?”
- Những thực tế hiện tại: Mặc dù rất đau lòng khi thấy một số nhà thờ, trong đó có Holy Rosary, không còn được sử dụng, chúng ta cần phải đối mặt với những thực tế khắc nghiệt của thời điểm này. Last year, Pope St. John XXIII STEM Academy conducted an Enrollment Potential Study in collaboration with Meitler, a national Catholic school planning firm. This year, we are extending that work to create a strategic plan for Pope St. John XXIII STEM Academy for the next five years.
As we did in the previous study, we know and understand the importance of hearing from families who currently have children enrolled at Pope St. John XXIII STEM Academy. We are asking you to complete an online survey in order to share your insights and opinions about Pope St. John XXIII STEM Academy. This survey is distinct from the survey many of you completed previously.
Please complete the survey as soon as possible, but no later than May 14. It should take approximately 8-10 minutes to answer the survey questions. All responses are confidential and very important.
