Pope Saint John XXIII, affectionately known as "the Good Pope” was a humble shepherd who quietly transformed the Church and the world. As pope, he surprised the world with his warmth, his humor, and above all, his courageous vision.

His most lasting legacy is the calling of the Second Vatican Council — an act of trust in the Holy Spirit and in the People of God. He opened the windows of the Church so that the Gospel could breathe more freely in the modern world. His words were gentle but bold, and his actions reflected a Church not of fear, but of mercy and hope.

Pope John XXIII taught us that true reform begins with compassion, dialogue, and the courage to see beyond our walls. His legacy is not only found in documents and decrees, but in every act of welcome, every word of peace, and every step toward unity in the Body of Christ.

As we unveil this sculpture, may we be inspired to carry forward his spirit of openness and joy, trusting always in God’s renewing grace.



My brothers and sisters, as we gather in praise of God on the occasion of the unveiling of this beautiful new image of Pope St. John XXIII for public veneration, we must be properly disposed and have a clear appreciation of the meaning of this celebration. The Church blesses images and statues and presents them for public veneration by the faithful for several reasons: 

·     so that when we look upon the representations of those who have followed Christ faithfully, we will be motivated to seek the city that is to come;

·     so that we will learn the way that will enable us most surely to attain complete union with Christ;

·     so that, as we struggle along with our earthly cares, we will be mindful of the saints, those friends and coheirs of Christ who are also our own brothers and sisters and our special benefactors;

·     and so that we will remember how they love us, are near us, intercede ceaselessly for us, and are joined to us in a marvelous communion.
